Every experienced painter will tell you the same thing: the most important skill in this trade isn't knowing how to roll a wall. It's knowing how to come home safe every day.
The four rules that protect you every day
Rule 1 โ Ladder and scaffold safety
Inspect every ladder before use โ check for cracks, loose rungs, and damaged feet
Set extension ladders at a 4:1 ratio (1 foot out for every 4 feet up)
Never overreach โ your belt buckle should stay between the side rails
Three points of contact at all times: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand
On scaffolding, always use guardrails and ensure planks are fully secured
Rule 2 โ Chemical and fume safety
Always read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for every product you use
Oil-based paints, lacquers, and solvents require strong ventilation โ open windows, use fans
Use a respirator (not just a dust mask) when spraying or working with oil-based products
Never mix unknown chemicals โ some combinations produce toxic gases
Store solvents away from heat sources โ they are highly flammable
Rule 3 โ Lead paint awareness
Any building built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint
Sanding or scraping lead paint releases hazardous dust โ use wet methods and HEPA respirators
EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule requires certification before disturbing lead paint in pre-1978 residential buildings
If in doubt, test before you sand โ lead test kits cost under $15 at any hardware store
Rule 4 โ Use your PPE every time
Safety glasses โ always when sanding, scraping, or painting overhead
Gloves โ protect hands from solvents and chemicals
Respirator โ required with sprayers, oil-based products, and in enclosed spaces
Non-slip footwear โ essential on ladders and scaffolding
โ ๏ธThe most dangerous words in the trade: "It's just latex โ it'll be fine." Even water-based paints can irritate airways in enclosed spaces. Always ventilate. The painters who get hurt are the ones who skipped safety because they'd done it a hundred times before.
